Tis the season! Holiday parties and celebrations are everywhere. I only had time for a quick visit , but did not want to miss being inside Bonhams Auction House. Traditional Home Magazine hosted a Holiday Reception and Private Preview of the upcoming 20th Century Decorative Arts Auction on a cold December evening.  There were about 50 people mingling through 3 large rooms at the swank, lower level of 580 Madison Avenue. I was amazed when I saw a gorgeous 4 panel, painted and scored wood screen (pictured several times below).  Doris Athineos saw my discovery expression and became a wonderful tour guide . . . . she knows her antiques.  Champagne, Apple Cider and Sparkling Water were served at the 6-8 pm gathering.

Since I was party hopping and pounding the pavement in my new Gucci boots ;  my question for the evening was who makes your most expensive shoes?

Gorgeous hand-painted 4 panel screen by Pierre Bobot
Just in case you didn't see the previous photo - created in 1950 and sold for 20K

No food was served - can't take the chance of crumbs or food stains on
those valuable antiques. There were waiters walking
around with empty trays - we thought it was a nibble treat !!

Bonhams is a privately owned British auction house and one of the world's oldest and largest auctioneers of fine art and antiques. The Bonhams name is recognized worldwide throughout all sectors of the fine art, antiques and collectors market.

The present company was formed by the merger in November 2001 of Bonhams & Brooks and Phillips Son & Neale. This brought together two of the four surviving Georgian auction houses in London, Bonhams having been founded in 1793, and Phillips in 1796 by Harry Phillips, formerly a senior clerk to James Christie. Today the amalgamated business handles fine art and antiques in more than 60 specialist collecting areas. The firm has continued to grow and change since the merger in 2001. The last ten years have been among the most dramatic and fast-growing in its history.

  1. There are multiple bars and rest rooms, so depending on the size of your event you can accommodate everyone with no waiting in line for beverages.
